The artificial grass season for us normally starts in March, typically when the frosts and rains die down a bit. Over the winter months, however, some dog owners have had problems with their beloved dogs exercising and toileting in the back gardens, which in some cases causes a bit of a mud bath. We were contacted by a dog owner from Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire who asked us to advise on the best solution to stop muddy grass. Apart from keeping the dog off the grass in winter, we advised that a well prepared substructure and pet friendly artificial grass would be an ideal solution and save one any lawn maintenance throughout the year.
We have a particular astrograss that is particularly suitable for dog owners, as it is extremely free draining and the backing has antibacterial properties too. When fitting synthetic lawns for dog owners we would recommend that the ground is dug out a little deeper than normal and the weed membrane installed on top of the weed treated compacted soil (not at the top directly under the astroturf). The reason for this is so that the urine etc drains down quickly and deeply and doesn't get trapped at the top of the grass where normally the weed membrane would go. Urine and faeces trapped at the top is particularly unpleasant and causes odours.
The excavation is filled will a sufficient depth of compacted Type 1 hard core and topped with compacted whin dust with and additional concrete round the perimeter to stop weeds creeping out of the edges. The fake lawn then has to be securely fixed down throughout the entire area.
